Cornell Student Receives Jack Craver Scholarship |
|
AH&LEF Honors Industry Influencer's Passing By Furthering Student's Hospitality Education |
In memoriam of accomplished hospitality industry professional Jack Craver, the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF) has awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Anna Worthington, a student at his alma mater, the Cornell Hotel School. Worthington, a sophomore with a major in Lodging Administration, earned this award based on her enthusiastic dedication to learning all facets of the hotel industry via numerous summer internships in addition to her studies.
Worthington received the scholarship as a celebration of Carver, a nearly 50-year industry veteran who held a bachelor's of science degree from Cornell, who passed away in May 2008. Craver served on AH&LEF's Research Committee since its inception in 1993, and served as its chair for 12 years. Under his chairmanship, almost $2 million in grants were funded to benefit the lodging industry, including such projects as several biannual Lodging Surveys, the Impact of Room Taxes on the Lodging Industry, Turnover and Diversity studies, the Hotel Technology 101 Primer series, the Key to Best Practices in the U.S. Lodging, and the Quiet Good study.
Craver spent most of his lengthy career holding executive-level management positions at lodging companies and properties throughout the United States, including The Mayflower Hotel (Washington, D.C.), The Plaza Hotel (New York City, N.Y.), Host Enterprises, Americana Hotels, and Horizon Hotels. In 2002, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) presented him the prestigious Lawson A. Odde Award, which recognizes individuals who make outstanding contributions to the lodging industry. A former U.S. Army lieutenant, Craver was active in various volunteer positions, including the Cornell Hotel Society and its Foundation, the Pennsylvania Travel Council, and Skal Club of Central Pennsylvania.
'While we are deeply saddened by Jack's passing, we know that helping an exceptional student like Anna in his honor helps further his dream of a progressive hospitality industry,' said Joori Jeon, CPA, CAE, AH&LEF president/COO.
AH&LEF is the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA). Last year, AH&LEF gave nearly $1 million to prepare promising college students for a career in hospitality, attract and retain quality industry professionals, and fund valuable research for lodging properties. Since the Foundation's inception, $11 million has been disbursed through its scholarship, education, outreach, and research programs.
